WWI Veterans come home to find there are no medical services for the wounded, no jobs, and no pensions. Canadians who had jobs were unsatisfied with their wages. Because of the booming economy prices were rising by wages were not. In May of 1919 Winnipeg's metal and building workers walked off their jobs Demanding higher wages, shorter work week and collective bargaining. There were strikes occurring in many job sites. Strikes driven by unions of workers and also created unions. The outcome of the strike was that: The general strike(all the workers in a city) included 30,000 workers (a whole city) causing the city to come to a halt. Business leaders and politicians saw strike as a communist conspiracy. Mayor of Winnipeg appointed special police force and the strike turned violent. The outcome was one striker dead, 30 injured. The government defeated the strike in 43 days. Although at the time it seemed as though the strike was a failure, gradually the workers were given what they asked for.
