Rwanda (1994)
The Rwandan Genocide was the 1994 mass murder of an estimated 800,000 people in the East African country of Rwanda
Over 100 days, between 500,000 to 1,000,000 Rwandans were killed.
There was longstanding ethnic competition and tensions between the minority Tutsi, who had controlled power for centuries, and the majority Hutu peoples, who had come in 1959–62 and overthrown the Tutsi monarchy.
Canada, Ghana, and the Netherlands provided consistent support for the UN mission under the command of Romeo Dallaire
The Red Cross estimated that 500,000 Rwandans had been killed between April 6th and May 17
UN agreed to send 5,500 troops
This was the original number of troops requested by General Dallaire before the killing escalated
UN also requested 50 armoured personnel carriers from the United States; Deployment was delayed due to arguments over their cost and other factors
Summary
The Rwandan Genocide was a huge tragedy that affected the whole world. The mass murder of almost 1 million Rwandans, when a rebel group, composed mostly of Tutsi refugees, invaded northern Rwanda from Uganda, killing the Hutu clan who whad overthrown the Tutsi monarchy in 1959-1962. Not very many soldiers were sent in by the UN and the orgiginal number of troops requested was not enough by the time they got there.
