Prime Minster William Lyon MacKenzie King elected in 1921 Pushed for greater independence from Britain. Britain invaded Turkey, but Canada refused to back them in 1922(Chanak Affair) 1922 Halibut Treaty with UD 1925 Elections= Liberals- 101 seats, Conservatives-116 seats, Progressives-24 seats. Liberals stay in power even though Conservatives should be by offering a coalition with the Progressives. They lose this proposal because of a liquor smuggling scandal in Customs department. A motio of Censure was called (a vote of disapproval for the government) MacKenzie King asks Governor General Viscount Byng to call an election. Byng refused but was later forced to do this by MacKenzie King. King appealed to Canada that this was undemocratic because an appointed official by him would not take his advice. King won the election and no Governor General has acted against the wishes of a Prime Minister. Informally ends all and any power of the Governor General.

This crisis is the reason the Governor General now cannot rebel against the decisions the Prime Minister makes, and it ended all power of the Governor General. William Lyon MacKenzie was elected again and later one helped Canada extremely in gaining it's independence.
