First Past the Post vs. Proportional Representations vs. Preferential Ballot
First Past the Post
In the first past the post system, the candidate with the most votes in a riding is the winner. The party doesn't have to win a majority of votes, it just has to win more than the other candidates. Proportional Representations is used in many countries such as Israel, Holland and Italy. This makes it based on popular vote for all votes cast for candidates and if a party gets more than 38% of the votes they get that many seats. A Preferential Ballot is when the candidates are ranked in order of preference. The Candidates are awarded votes/points for each positions they are voted in for.
