The Falling of the Berlin Wall, 1989 and Breakup of Soviet Union
The Fall of the Berlin Wall, which will always be used as a symbol for the end of the Cold War
Took about three decades until the Wall was torn down.
Acting on Perestroika people of Berlin begin to destroy Berlin Wall (1989)
Hungary effectively disables its physical border defenses with Austria on 19 August 1989 In September, more than 13,000 East German tourists escaped through Hungary to Austria.
The guards finally yielded, opening the checkpoints and allowing people through with little or no identity checking.
The date on which the Wall fell is considered to have been 9 November 1989 but the Wall in its entirety was not torn down immediately
People came to the wall with sledgehammers or hammers and chisels to chip off souvenirs, demolishing lengthy parts of it in the process and creating several unofficial border crossings. These people were nicknamed "Mauerspechte" (wall woodpeckers).
This set up a chain of events
The East German regime announced the opening of ten new border crossings the following weekend
Other satellite states soon followed
German unification happens in 1990
1991 Communism ceases to exist in Soviet Union after attempted coup on Gorbachev
Boris Yeltsin takes over as new leader after preventing the coup
The Fall of the Berlin wall is one monumental symbols for the ending of the Cold War. Because of the book Presetroika, written by the Russian president Gorbachev, who wanted the Soviets to be more open, the people of Berlin began to destroy the Berlin Wall, which separated the East and West. Countries around Germany disabled their border defences and even the wall guards yielded, letting people through with no identity checking. The Fall caused the Eat Germans to open ten new border crossings created by people coming to the wall to chip off pieces. The other satellite states followed in suit soon after and finally in 1990 there was German Unification. Communism no longer exists in the Soviet Union and Boris Yeltsin, the first president of the Russian Federation outlaws a communist party.
