Human rights are "basic rights and freedoms that all people are entitled to regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, race, religion, language, or other status." Some of the main and most important rights are Freedom of Speech, Rights to Adequate Food and Shelter, and Protection from Abuse and Torture. Many countries have different rights and dispute what human rights entail such as Muslim women having to cover themselves in public and many punishments in Saudi Arabia being thought of as 'extreme' compared to Canada. There is a Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was signed by the United Nations in 1948 which all countries that are in the UN and all countries in general should and are forced to abide by. "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." All levels of government in Canada have signed and agreed to this declaration and since 1982 all Canadians have the right to challange any laws they feek violates their human rights. If human rights are not met there are many serious problems within the country.
